The Challenge
The operation relied on road trains operating with varying trailer configurations depending on road conditions, haul routes and seasonal constraints. During wet weather, trailer combinations were often adjusted to maintain safe operations, creating difficulties in accurately tracking production and reconciling material movements.
The site required the ability to capture production independently for each trailer, ensuring reporting reflected actual tonnes moved rather than relying on assumptions or fixed truck factors. This was particularly important when only a subset of trailers could be utilised due to weather or road access restrictions.
In addition, the highly seasonal nature of the operation meant production periodically ceased during the wet season. The customer wanted a fleet management solution that could accurately support its unique haulage requirements without continuing to incur unnecessary software costs while equipment was parked.
The Solution
Haultrax deployed its Fleet Management System across the prime mover and haulage fleet, leveraging capabilities specifically designed to support road train and long-haul mining operations.
The system tracks individual trailer IDs throughout each cycle, allowing operators to identify exactly which trailers are loaded and tipped. This enables trailer capacities to be aggregated dynamically and ensures production calculations accurately reflect actual operating conditions, even when trailer configurations change throughout the shift.
Using a combination of trailer signals, vehicle speed, location and loader proximity data, the system automatically identifies loading and dumping events without increasing operator workload or introducing additional manual processes.
The deployment was supported by Haultrax’s Fleet Management Software-as-a-Service (FMSaaS) model, which bundles hardware, software, updates and support into a single monthly fee per asset. Unlike traditional fleet management systems, subscriptions can be paused during seasonal shutdowns, allowing the operation to reduce costs while maintaining the ability to rapidly recommission the system when production resumes.
The Outcome
The operation gained greater confidence in production reporting across its prime mover fleet, regardless of changing trailer configurations and seasonal operating constraints.
Automated trailer tracking and independent dump capture improved production reconciliation, reduced manual reporting requirements and ensured truck factors accurately reflected actual fleet configurations throughout the shift.
The ability to pause subscriptions during seasonal shutdowns also allowed the operation to align technology costs with production activity without losing system continuity.
